METABO scenarios
In order to improve the pragmatic approach of the project and address
diabetes control through the real every-day diabetic-life situations, we
identified six different “segments”, corresponding to six different
scenarios of use for the METABO platform. These use cases are, in fact, six
possible applications of the METABO to manage specific problems related to
diabetes control. The identification of the segments aims at improving
understanding and applicability of the METABO approach by patients, doctors and
policy makers and expanding the role of METABO in disease management over and
beyond a simple IT tool for glucose control.
The following segmentation has been chosen for a subsequent study of the
patients needs:
- Changes in the environment: This segment is dedicated to
the study of the conditions in which the users are exposed to changes in their
usual environment, no matter what these changes are, so that they cause a
disruption in their treatment routine.
- Physical exercise. This segment intends to focus on the
effect of physical activity over glucose metabolism and diabetes control.
- Sudden hypoglycemia prediction: One of the most important
problems related to hypoglycemia is the fact that diabetics tend to loose
awareness of the early, autonomic symptoms (showing a glucose fall) as their
disease advances. This can lead to extraordinary situations and, sometimes, to
the death of the patient. For this reason, the indirect study of hypoglycemia
signs has become a main subject and this segment will focus on its
investigation. It is of special relevance the fact that this study is very
innovative and has not been performed before.
- Lack of motivation: In Diabetes Mellitus, especially in
T1DM but also in T2DM, there is the need to deal with a very important
psychosomatic complex, whose comprehension is vital to provide an adequate care
to the patient. There are a great amount of factors that may cause the
non-adherence of the patient to the treatment, leading to an instable metabolic
state that will have long term health consequences.
- Unstable diabetes control: Segment V of METABO will
address the case of non-brittle patients who cannot reach metabolic stability
despite the best available treatment strategy has been put in place. METABO
will, thus, focus in isolating the different factors that are likely to be
studied, such as food intake, physical activity, insulin intake, glucose in
blood, etc.
- Comorbidity disease management: In this segment, the METABO
project will address the case of a diabetic patient who is also affected by a
second disease which might or might not be directly related to diabetes.
Patients with co-morbidities (i.e. the co-presence of multiple major diseases)
represent a significant challenge for clinical medicine as one disease may
affect progression and response to treatment of the other.
This classification will define the future target market since the different
needs and issues that the project addresses here are shared by most of the
diabetic patients and, in some cases, a single case can be identified in more
than one of these segments.
